The recent approval of two gene therapies in the sickle cell disease (SCD) space, combined with the launch of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)’s Cell and Gene Therapy Access Model (CGT) set the stage for a paradigm shift in not only the treatment of patients with SCD but also the coverage of moonshot therapies. CGT is poised to expand access for this vulnerable patient population, with the hope of fostering additional outcomes-based agreements (OBAs) across other lines of business and therapeutic categories.

This session will cover not only the potential impact of gene therapy on the SCD landscape, but also the financial and operational challenges associated with gene therapies, providing the framework of how both commercial and Medicaid programs approach risk mitigation while seeking to increase access and improve patient outcomes.

  2. Identify risk mitigation options for gene therapies that are utilized by commercial and Medicaid programs.
